NEWS RELEASE
First-time gift will have an enduring impact on patients from around the region who face sudden emergency health care issues including life-threatening injury and illness
Pace Law Firm, a West Toronto-based legal firm, today announced a half-million dollar donation to the Emergency Department at Trillium Health Centre.
Mississauga/West Toronto, ON
April 6, 2009
"Sudden injuries and illnesses can be devastating," says Al Pace, the firm's principal and founder. "With more than one million residents relying on Trillium for health care, we want our regional hospital to remain at the front line of emergency care."
Trillium Health Centre has one of the busiest emergency departments in Canada with more than 125,000 patient visits a year at its two locations. The emergency team assesses and treats patients with a wide range of needs, including stroke, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, vascular and cardiac care, mental health issues and children's services. Trillium's highly-trained interprofessional team provides access to quality health care to more than 240 patients a day at the 24/7 Mississauga Emergency Department and 140 patients a day at the Urgent Care Centre at Trillium - West Toronto, which is open daily from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m.
"Originally built in the 1950's and upgraded nearly a decade ago, Trillium's Mississauga emergency department is coping with high volumes of patients who are older and have increasingly acute and complex medical needs," says Dr. Alan Campbell, chief of Emergency Services. "One in four patients arriving at the emergency centre come in by ambulance and 85 per cent of the patients are diagnosed at the second and third highest levels of acuity."
With the support of Pace Law Firm, Trillium will replace furniture, upgrade technology, and refresh the facilities to create a bright, spacious waiting area and specialized treatment spaces for critical and high-risk cases, dramatically improving the emergency room experience for every patient.
"Pace Law Firm has distinguished itself as a firm committed to helping people in their moment of dire need," said Steve Hoscheit, president and CEO, Trillium Health Centre Foundation. "Like Trillium Health Centre, Pace Law Firm is a safe haven for those who require exceptional care and service when life takes an unexpected and often tragic turn. We are grateful for this generous contribution to our facility. It will have lasting impact in this community."
"As a member of the West Toronto and Mississauga business community for more than 30 years, we see Trillium Health Centre as the best fit for our philanthropic support," adds Pace. "Not only do they have a first-class emergency department, but they are also committed to providing the absolute best care to patients and their families."
