Helmets on Kids: A Community Partnership

Students from Credit Valley Public School in Erin Mills will help kick off a new program called "Helmets on Kids: A Community Partnership" tomorrow morning at the Peel Children's Safety Village.
Helmets on Kids aims to secure the donation of 1,000 bicycle helmets for the Safety Village this year. The program also promotes awareness of proper bicycle helmet use.
The partners in the venture include Peel Health, the Brain Injury Association of Halton/Peel, Peel Regional Police and the Safety Village.
Toronto's Pace Law Firm, where they specialize in personal injury law, will donate the first 500 helmets.
Sandev Singh Purewal, chair of Peel Helmets on Kids and a member of the Pace Law Firm, will join Chief Michael Metcalf of Peel Police, public health nurse Joan Webster, Brian Injury Association Executive Director Jorun Rucels and Christie Hallett of Peel Children's Safety Village in making the announcement at 10 a.m.

The Hip Hip Hooray! events take place in communities from Vancouver to Gander on the last Sunday in May (some cities may differ). These celebratory family events consist of a short walk symbolic of patients' return to mobility, refreshments, and other activities. Patients, surgeons, surgical staff and other supporters of orthopaedic health attend the event.
Proceeds are allocated locally and nationally. This two-pronged approach means that hospitals and surgical staff benefit directly from the dollars raised in their area through equipment purchase, continuing professional education, or other priorities determined by the organizing committee. At the same time, the Foundation uses a share of the funds to support its research, education and social policy programs.

The Owen Sound 150 year Anniversary was a month long event ending with a weekend of celebration and a parade. Pace Law Firm sponsored this weekend event by running TV commercials on the A channel in support of the event. Pace Law Firm also donated 8 box seats to the Attack for a fund raiser drawing, provided free water to the volunteers all week, and provided free water at the parade to the attendees. The event was a huge success!!

The campaign surpassed its goal in 2007 and raised the most money since the campaign's inception. In over 55 participating communities, much-needed funds are raised to support critical programs and services for over 160,000 people affected by Alzheimer's disease and their families. Helmets on Kids: A Community Partnership
Our goal is to bring this excellent program to Peel Region in 2008 with the help of OTLA, BIAPH, The Peel Children's Safety Village, The Region of Peel Health Unit, Peel Regional Police and the Peel District School Board. In future years, we hope to quickly expand to include the Dufferin Peel Catholic School Board and more community partners.
The proposed team for this 2008 effort is led by Sandev S. Purewal, Pace Law Firm, OTLA & BIAPH, Chair.
The plan is to have the team and basic plan in place by the end of January 2008 so that fundraising ($7,500 - $10,000) can begin and helmets can be purchased. The hope is to have a kick off event in June 2008 to coincide with Brain Injury Awareness Month. A kick off event at the Peel Children's Safety Village on June 11, 2008 would be ideal as it is an admin. day, which could possibly host a school with several students in need.
